PP prices fall as PS prices rise
North American commodity resin markets moved in different directions in August as shifting feedstock costs and uneven demand continued to shape pricing.
North American polypropylene resin prices fell 4 cents per pound in August, while prices for polystyrene resin increased by 6 cents.
The PP decline was tied to lower prices for polymer-grade propylene (PGP) feedstock. Lower demand also played a role, with PP operating rates recently falling below 80 percent.
PGP supplies have improved following July outages at Dow and Invista propane dehydrogenation units. Both units were back in operation by mid-August, adding feedstock supply and putting downward pressure on PGP prices.
The August PP decline reversed a 3-cent increase in July, when higher PGP costs pushed up resin prices even as PP demand remained moderate at best.
Weak demand continues to weigh on the PP market. Improving feedstock availability and lower operating rates also have reduced some of the supply pressure that had supported prices earlier in the summer.
In PS, the 6-cent hike was impacted by a jump in the price of benzene feedstock, which is used to make styrene monomer.
