New report aims to support use of polystyrene

A trade group promoting polystyrene recycling has released a new report arguing that the material is safe for food-contact applications.

The Polystyrene Recycling Alliance, part of the larger Plastics Industry Association trade group, has just issued a report entitled “Polystyrene: The Safety Record.”

“The evidence on polystyrene safety is clear, consistent and decades deep,” said Justin Riney, chair of the alliance. He also is sustainability commercial manager for the Americas at Ineos Styrolution Americas, a company that makes stryrenics.

The new report compiles details the alliance says supports that view, including information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as the European Food Safety Authority.

“It addresses the persistent public confusion between styrene — the raw liquid ingredient used to manufacture polystyrene — and polystyrene itself, the solid, chemically stable material that results from it. These are two distinct substances with fundamentally different safety profiles, and the distinction between them is at the center of the polystyrene safety debate,” the alliance said.
