US post-consumer plastic recycling jumps in latest report

New statistics indicate post-consumer plastic recycling hit 5.1 billion pounds in 2024 in the United States, up more than 100 million pounds from the previous bi-annual estimate.

The new numbers were released July 16 by the Association of Plastic Recyclers and the U.S. Plastics Pact and are based on surveys conducted by plastic recycling research and technology firm Stina Inc. and the National Association for PET Container Resources trade group.

“The industry has proven it can recover more than 5 billion pounds of post-consumer plastic, but holding steady isn’t the goal,” APR CEO Steve Alexander said in a statement.

The study is conducted every two years, APR says, adding that the results are “the most accurate measurement of the volume of post-consumer plastic recovered for recycling across the country based on data from facility operations.”

The 5.132 billion pound total for 2024 is an increase of 114.9 million pounds from 2022 numbers, APR said.
