Optimism in the auto industry
The auto industry saw sales drop 2.7 percent in the first half of 2026, but automakers, suppliers and dealers remain upbeat. In fact, in the newest Automotive News Auto Industry Confidence Index, executives were the most optimistic that they’ve been since the survey began more than a year ago.
“The industry’s still dealing with a high number of issues, but there is still optimism for where the industry is going,” Jeff Schuster, director of automotive market insights with Mobility Global, formerly S&P Global Mobility, told Auto News, a sister publication of Plastics News.
But that optimism seems to be based on relative expectations. The industry had projected sales to drop even more in the second quarter than they did. There was even a resurgence in sales in June, with gas-electric hybrid cars showing real strength, indicating that conditions may be stronger than expected, Schuster said.
