Don’t expect dramatic changes in the economy this year
The fireworks and patriotic music are over, so it’s time for my economic outlook for the second half of the year. The best way I can describe my current expectations is with the acronym MOTS, or “more of the same.”
I have never liked this type of forecast because things never just stay the same. But right at this moment, I simply do not see anything that I believe will alter our trajectory in the near term.
Now, just to be clear, I can identify plenty of risks to this outlook in the longer term, both upside and downside, that may eventually disrupt the prevailing trends. I do not believe the current trends will go on forever.
But we have witnessed several things in the past couple of years that could have significantly altered the course of our economy but ended up having only a modest impact, if there was any impact at all. Since I cannot foresee anything of greater consequence happening in the next six months, the outlook for the second half of 2026 is MOTS.
